Where We Work? ---Dang Tribal Program

also see Mumbai Slum Program

Dang is a tribal district in the state of Gujarat. The villages of Dang have some of the most poorest and backward populations with almost 60% of them being below the poverty line. These villages are also very remote and lack basic amenities like transportation and health care.

In 2001, the villages of Dang reported a very high incidence of avoidable blindness in children and adults. They also had very high levels of morbidity and mortality especially in children and women due the inadequate health services. We realised that the communities of Dang faced the triple evils of illiteracy, unemployment and poverty and were trapped in the vicious cycle of disease and infirmity.

Our objective was to improve the nutrition, education, income and environmental sanitation of these communities to decrease the morbidity and mortality and control avoidable blindness, by developing primary eye care as an integral component of primary health care.

We therefore decided to provide comprehensive eye care services with community development in the villages of Dang through active community participation. We initiated and successfully implemented a pilot project in 10 villages and due to the overwhelming demand from the community the program was expanded.
